Hi! Long time no see. It’s officially Autumn, which means I’m drinking pumpkin spice oat milk lattes, reading three books a week, waiting for sweater weather, and lighting my candles at night. It also means I constantly have something cozy on my TV throughout the day.
Autumn is Gilmore Girls season, hence the title of this newsletter. The other day, I started my annual rewatch with a friend. I usually skip around seasons, or start from somewhere in the middle when I rewatch. Something about the show puts me right in the fall mood. As I lounge in bed for my day off tomorrow, I’m going to be reading my current fantasy book and watching some of my fall favorites. So, I figured what better reason than to give you some cozy fall recommendations.
Little Women (2019) has a combination of vibrant foliage, yearning, and coming of age storyline that perfectly captures autumnal energy. I’m sure you know the story, given that it was first published in 1868. If you somehow missed the memo, Little Women is about four sisters — Jo, Beth, Amy, and Meg. Their father is away helping war efforts, writing to his ‘little women’ when he can. The movie starts at Christmas, but still feels like fall to me.
My favorite movie probably of all time is Good Will Hunting (1997). Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and the incomparable Robin Williams, this movie tells the story of a misled misfit who must go through therapy. The scenery in the movie is gorgeous, the character development is beautiful, and there’s a hint of romance. What more could you want in a movie? It also has one of my favorite endings, but I won’t spoil it for you.
Watching the Twilight saga movies during the fall is basically required of a girl in her twenties. My personal favorite is New Moon, but don’t look too far into that one, okay? They’re obviously gloomier movies, but tow the line between romantic drama and spooky if you consider sparkling vampires spooky, I guess.
Friday Night Lights (2006-2011) and One Tree Hill (2003-2012) are sporty, dramatic, romantic TV shows. They’re very 2000s, so be ready for that. Friday Night Lights is obviously football, whereas One Tree Hill is basketball. If you somehow haven’t watched them, you’ll be hooked, I have no doubt.
The Harry Potter movies are a childhood comfort that represent autumn to me. September comes around, and I’m thinking of the train ride to Hogwarts. The decorations for Halloween in the Great Hall were a Target dollar section’s dreams. My favorites and the two I rewatch the most often are The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Half Blood Prince. I haven’t sat down and done a full marathon, so I’m thinking of adding it to the fall to-do list.
On my watch list (which is in progress) for this fall is When Harry Met Sally, Practical Magic, and anything to do with Winnie the Pooh (while not explicitly autumnal, it’s a great comfort of mine.) As September slowly comes to a close, and we venture into October, I’m looking forward to more cozy movie nights with my pumpkin vanilla candle and cute mugs of tea.
